As the Republican national convention prepares to open, one has to wonder just what the party has to celebrate this week and what it can accomplish other than the grudging election of John McSame as its presidential nominee.
It will be difficult to celebrate the presidency of George Bush, who will likely go down in history as one of the five worst presidents ever. McSame has promised to continue Bush's policies.
Then there's Sara Palin, who clearly was a desperation choice for vice president. How can we believe that McSame has the country's best interest at heart when at 72 and in less than excellent health, he chooses someone with a profound lack of experience on the national stage to be a heartbeat away from the presidency. Can the GOP's idea of sound leadership really be eight years of George Bush, John McSame and the possibility of Sara Palin as president? Is this the best they've got?
Clearly the Republican Party is in shambles as it goes into its convention with the added insult of a hurricane headed toward New Orleans, reminding America that McSame and Bush ate cake while New Orleans flooded.
It's no wonder that America is responding to Barack Obama's message of hope. The GOP has made it clear that the rest of us are on our own. They have other priorities.
