The Metro Council Thursday night stood up against a proposed referendum that would force government to provide services in English only and voted 25 to 8 to urge voters not to sign petitions calling for a vote and not to vote for the issue if it makes it onto the ballot.
Led by Councilmember Ronnie Steine, the council voted against the politics of discrimination. While the referendum is being led by Councilman Eric Crafton, the primary speech in favor of defeating the resolution was made by Councilman Randy Foster, who ultimately abstained in the vote with Councilmember Vivian Wilhoite.
Those backing Steine's resolution were councilmembers Barry, Garrett, Tygard, Maynard, Matthews, Hunt, Murray, Jameson, Cole, Forkum, Ryman, Burch, Page, Moore, Durbin, Gilmore, Langster, Evans, Holleman, McGuire, Toler, Coleman, Todd and Mitchell.
Those against the resolution were Craddock, Bennett, Gotto, Claiborne, Baker, Crafton, Dominy and Duvall. Councilmembers not listed were absent.
Kudos also to Mayor Karl Dean who made a special appearance before the council to ask support for Steine's resolution.
