Maybe I've swallowed the Kool-Aid, but I've got to take a moment to praise government employees.
Over the past few weeks I've been working on projects that had me going to various Metro and state offices. It included the Election Commission, Planning Department, Metro schools the courts and various state offices.
Without exception, my experience with the government employees I worked with wasn't just good -- it was exceptional. They constantly went beyond my requests to help me accomplish my tasks. And they did it all with a smile and good humor.
Now I'm sure we've all had bad experiences with government -- I cringe when I recall my four-hour waits at the DMV or pictures of Vic Lineweaver in a bath robe -- but I find those to be the exception rather than the rule.
As a taxpayer, I'm grateful to have these people working in government. No one goes into government work expecting to get rich. The least we can do is to say thanks for the jobs they do and the positive attitude they bring to their work.

While it's wonderful that you got such great service from state and metro employees, it's only because you did not deal with the Dept of Safety. I spent 8 hours missing work waiting with my daughter to get her drivers license at the new licence testing facility in Williamson County even though we had an appointment! There were plenty of employees working -- no apparent shortage. They just took 45-60 minutes fulfilling each simple request. I manage a customer service department and I've never seen such inefficiency. I would be fired in a heartbeat from my corporate job if I ran a customer service operation like the one the Dept of Safety runs.
