Evolution is about to get reduced status in Florida. The state's House and Senate have passed what is called the "Evolution Academic Freedom Act." With a name like that, you know that science is about to get hosed.
The bills popped up in the legislature just weeks after the State Board of Education adopted new science standards for public schools. The standards were controversial because for the first time they require students be taught evolution -- and that it is a "fundamental concept" underlying all of biology.
Not so fast, was the response from the knuckle-dragging neocons in the legislature. The bill calls for teaching a "critical analysis" of evolution, which is seen as a green light for teachers to introduce religion into classrooms.
The House and Senate must still resolve minor differences in the bill before it goes to the governor and both sides agree the issue will probably end up in court.
