While the Democratic candidates are running about playing their version of the schoolyard game "who said what about whom," John McCain has been pursuing a proven technique for running for office.
Look like a president.
Clinton and Obama talk about 3 a.m. phone calls, but McCain has been going to Iraq to check out the situation first hand and have discussions about China's future and other foreign policy matters.
The strategy is a good one because not only is it inexpensive, it gets great press coverage and it makes the candidate look like he could comfortably step into the role of president. The longer McCain can keep up this strategy, the better he will look.
In the meantime, the Democratic race gets uglier and uglier. Both campaigns are taking tougher positions and even in Nashville's blogosphere, those supporting individual candidates are getting more biting in their tone. Tensions everywhere are beginning to increase.
All that's needed for the Republicans to regain the White House is for this scenario to continue.
