Obama won more states (+5) and more delegates than Sen. Clinton yesterday, making him the winner of Super Tuesday – but only by a very small margin.
The Clinton campaign is doing a great job this morning of spinning her not-surprising wins in Massachusetts and California as major victories, then pointing to the delegate count and saying, “See? It’s a tie!”
Okay, fine—but the fact that we’ve gone from Hillary as frontrunner to no frontrunner tells you that Obama gained the most ground last night.
So here we are. A tie. Dead even.
What’s next?
Saturday: Louisiana (Obama)
Nebraska (Obama)
Washington (Obama)
Sunday: Maine (Obama)
Tuesday: DC (Obama)
Maryland (Obama)
Virginia (Toss-Up)
February 19: Hawaii (Obama)
Wisconsin (Toss-Up)
It looks like we’ll see at least another seven Obama victories this month, with only two at most for Clinton. We may well see a Obama clean sweep of all nine. Either way, it’ll look like Democratic voters have left Hillary behind. That’s a very difficult perception to overcome, so Clinton may be bleeding support badly heading into March.
Clinton will have to clean up in Ohio and Texas on March 4 in order to keep pace in the delegate race. She might, but Obama has three times as much cash as she does – and likely all the momentum coming out of February.
The race may be tied right now, but the calendar looks very good for Obama.
