Scott Moore, 7th district commissioner on the Knox County commission, unexpectedly resigned as commission chairman today. The resignation came after Moore's drubbing in Tuesday's election in a bid for the Republican nomination for county clerk. Foster Arnett took 65 percent of the vote with Moore coming in third in a four-person race with 11 percent.
Vice Chairman Thomas "Tank" Strickland took over the chair's duties. Commission members will select a replacement. Moore said he will continue to serve his district until his term expires in 2010.
Moore was just one of the casualties in Knox County where voters expressed their displeasure at those involved with commission activities last year that saw a court reject appointments made by commissioners after considering the candidate in private.
The Knoxville News Sentinel says, "Of the 11 candidates directly involved one way or another in last year's events, all Republicans, five won their primary contests, but three - Jimmy "J.J." Jones (sheriff), Sherry Witt (register of deeds) and Chuck Bolus (2nd District Commission) - were unopposed in the primary. They'll face Democrats in the August general election."
