During a straw poll Thursday night, local members of Democracy for Tennessee split on their choices for the Democratic presidential nominee with equal numbers going for Barack Obama and John Edwards. Hillary Clinton was a close second at one point behind.
The group was also evenly split on their choice for the candidate not on the ballot with Sen. Russ Feingold of Wisconsin and Al Gore getting equal votes.
In vice presidential choices, the group was told they could not vote for their choice for president. Again the group evenly split between Obama and Gov. Mark Warner of Virginia. Votes were also cast for Feingold and Bill Clinton.
For candidates most likely not to run again, the group listed Edwards, Hillary Clinton, John McCain and Fred Thompson. Obama was picked most likely to run again if he is defeated in the 2008 election.
Before the vote, members were given the chance to speak in favor of a candidate. Davidson County Republican officials were invited to attend, but did not respond to the invitation.
Still, DFT members were asked, if they were required to vote on the Republican ticket, which candidate they would choose. McCain led followed closely by former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
