In its second brief meeting of the day, the Metropolitan Nashville School Board voted to end the tenure of Dr. Pedro Garcia as director of schools and accept his contract buy-out proposal. The vote was unanimous.
Under the deal, the district will pay Garcia a total of $216,000 which includes salary and compensation for sick leave and holidays. The agreement becomes effective when Garcia receives his severance check which is expected to occur early next week.
The position will be filled temporarily internally according to the district's succession plan. The board will begin immediately to look for a successor.
There was no discussion among board members before the vote. The board had met in closed session Saturday to review the plan. Following the vote, the board was greeted by applause from the audience.
