Hillary Clinton's staffers are talking this afternoon about what happened to their plan and, it turns out, the plan worked -- they just didn't expect to see such a large turnout of Democrats for the caucuses.
The Des Moines Register quotes a Clinton staffer this afternoon saying, "Out of 80,000 Iowans the Clinton campaign identified as supporters, 72,000 showed up Thursday night."
That says a lot for the Clinton field plan -- they turned out 90 percent of the folks they identified as supporters and that's a great accomplishment for any campaign. But other campaigns also turned out supporters and that's what was unexpected.
Clearly as campaigns get better at getting out the vote, they'll also have to get better at differentiating themselves and communicating those differences in order to create the largest base possible. The winner will be the candidate with the largest base.
And that's the way a democracy should work.
