The very, very old political joke goes: "How can you tell when President Bush is lying? His lips are moving."
The president has been out moving his lips again and the issue has gone beyond political hucksterism, he's beating the drum for war.
According to the AP, President Bush said in a speech Saturday:
"Iran's actions threaten the security of nations everywhere," Bush said, calling on the Iranian government to make itself more accountable to its citizens. "So the United States is strengthening our long-standing security commitments with our friends in the Gulf, and rallying friends around the world to confront this danger before it is too late."
The difference is this time we know his data in incorrect before we put troops on the ground. The president insists that Iran has a dangerous nuclear program when we already know the program ended in 2003.
Still, the administration is pursuing its proven tactic that says if you repeat a lie often enough people will believe it. When the report disclaiming Iran's nuclear program came out, the administration took a pause in hopes that the public would forget. With the report saying Iran is NOT a great threat in its wake, the Bush Brethren have revived their efforts to spread the lie.
Nearly a year is left in the Bush administration and like a cornered, wounded animal, it is at its most dangerous. Despite countless failures, this administration seems undaunted in pursuing a path of enriching its friends, forcing its ideology on the voters via new laws and a sickening disrespect for the laws intended to protect this country from despotic rulership.
We need a press with the courage to call the President and other administration officials on their lies each and every time they repeat them. We need a Congress willing to do the same and use its pulpit to keep the Bush regime from bringing forth even more problems for America and the world.
And we need their action now. Time is not our friend.
